Allergies Unleashed: Ruh-roh. It turns out even "allergy-friendly" dogs can leave their owners sneezing.
Researchers at the Henry Ford Health Center in Detroit collected dust samples from 173 homes with 43 types
of purebred dogs and found no evidence that so-called hypoallergenic breeds - such as bichon frise, poodle,
and maltese - produce lower levels of allergenics in their environment. "This suggests that a dog's grooming
and behavior are bigger factors than pedigree," says study author Christine Cole Johnson, Ph.D.
If your four -legged friend has you reaching for the tissues, ask your doctor about ways to control your
symptoms. Be sure to wash your hands after petting the dog, have a nonallergic family member frequently
brush the dog outdoors, and consider making your bedroom a pet-free zone.
